Scholar monk's 56th death anniversary

A public meeting was held last Sunday at Suvisuddharama Hall, Wellawatte to mark the 56th death anniversary of scholar monk and a leading Viharadhipati of Suvisuddharama Purana Viharaya, Ven. Wellawtte Ariyawansa Nayaka Thera.

Ven. Kotugoda Dhammavasa, Anunayaka Thera, General Secretary, Lanka Amarapura Maha Sangha Sabha in his commemoration address said that the former Viharadhipati, Ven. Wellawatte Ariyawansa Nayaka Thera was one of the many leading pupils of the world renowned Buddhist scholar, Buddha Sasana Maha Sura Senapati, Kandamanage Matara Dharmaratana of 'Lak Mini Pahana' fame.

As a teacher he imparted knowledge in Sinhala, Pali, Sanskrit and Buddhism to numerous monks and laymen of the Colombo district.

He assisted in the establishment of Vajiraramaya at Bambalapitiya by Ven. Pelene Vajiragnana Nayaka Thera when he accompanied him from Suvisuddharama where he was residing to the Dharma Salawa in Bambalapitiya. He associated with Ven. Vajiragnana closely until his demise.

Ven. Ariyawansa in association with leading Buddhist monks like Head of Isipatanaramaya, Bambalapitiya, Ven. Dangedara Saranapala, Nayaka Thera, Head of Asokaramaya, Timbirigasyaya, Ven. Karandana Jinaratana, Nayaka Thera, Head of Vajirarama, Ven. Pelene Vajiragnana Nayaka Thera worked tirelessly for the propagation of the Buddha's doctrine.

He became such a popular exponent of the Buddha's doctrine that he was invited to preach the doctrine to audiences in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Ampara, Trincomalee, Badulla, Bandarawela, Nuwara Eliya, Matale, Kurunegala, Kandy, Kegalla and other distant places.

Ven. Ariyawansa's chief pupil the present incumbent of the vihara is an erudite monk with international connections. In association with eminent progressive Buddhist monks like Ven. Dr. Kotagama Vachissara, Ven. Mapalagama Vipulasara, Ven. Udakendewela Saranankara, Ven. Pohoddaramulle Somaloka and others made great efforts to interpret Buddhism and propagate it for the welfare of all humanity.

Ven. Gnanabhiwansa has the distinction of participating in inter-religions forums in foreign countries where he had ably presented the Buddhist point of view.
