Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) is hosting the 44th Council Meeting and Forum of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization (CTO), which will take place at the Trans Asia Hotel, Colombo from today, September 20-24, under the distinguished patronage of Mahinda Rajapakse, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and D. M. Jayaratne, Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Udarata Development. The CTO is an international development partnership between Commonwealth and non-Commonwealth governments, business and civil society organizations focused on development of Telecommunications and Information Communications Technologies (ICT). TRCSL has become a full member of the CTO since 2002 and represents Government of Sri Lanka on the Council. The CTO supports the international community's efforts to bridge the digital divide and promote social and economic development, by delivering to developing countries, unique knowledge sharing programmes in the use of ICTs in the areas of telecommunications, information technology and broadcasting. It is expected that around 80 delegates including Ministers, heads of regulatory authorities and chief executives of operating agencies, from 30 Commonwealth countries will attend the CTO forum and council meeting. The forum aims to bring together national and international development partners and the private sector to consider the critical issues upon which development through ICTs depend. This will include the latest technological applications in optical fiber, wireless, satellite. VOIP and challenges of providing broadband and last mile solutions in developing countries. During the forum speakers who are experts in various disciplines of telecommunications and ICT development will make a number of presentations. The forum will precede the Annual Council Meeting of CTO, a gathering of Ministers, regulators and sector members of CTO. These high level delegates are expected to discuss policy strategies and regulations that will facilitate to the development of telecommunications and ICT sectors in Commonwealth countries. |
