Canadian HC meets Tamilselvan

COLOMBO - During a meeting in Kilinochchi held yesterday with S. P. Tamilselvan, Political Head of the LTTE, the Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Ms. Valerie Raymond, reiterated Canada's strong support for the Norwegian-facilitated Sri Lanka peace process and concern about the continuing impasse that prevents a resumption of peace talks, states a Canadian High Commission press release.

The High Commissioner called on the LTTE to return to the peace talks and show flexibility with regard to the peace negotiations. She urged the LTTE to fully respect the Ceasefire Agreement and conveyed the Government of Canada's grave concern for the deteriorating security situation and ongoing political killings. The High Commissioner further urged the LTTE to promote and respect human rights. Canada remains concerned about the reports of continued recruitment of children.

The Government of Canada also urged the Government of Sri Lanka to continue its efforts to forge a consensus, with the governing UPFA coalition to resume the talks as soon as possible. Canada urges the Government of Sri Lanka to seek bipartisan support for advancement of the peace process.

Canada believes that a negotiated settlement which satisfies the legitimate aspirations of all Sri Lankans is the only way to secure a lasting peace. The High Commissioner called on both the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE to take bold steps to end the stalemate so that progress towards a final settlement to the conflict can be achieved.

Canada will continue to provide support for the rehabilitation and development of the conflict affected North-East as well as technical assistance related to power sharing options of governance.
