President commends Bribery Commission

from Manjula Fernando in New York

All forms of bribery and corruption should be brought to light to punish offenders, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga told a press conference at the UN on Wednesday.

In response to a question by the Daily News on the arrest of a senior DIG on bribery charges, President Kumaratunga said she had always held the view that bribery and corruption should not be tolerated.

She said: "The Commission Investigating Bribery and Corruption has been defunct for a long time due to various political reasons. I am happy to note that it has begun investigating public complaints.

"I wish the Commission would continue to work without prejudice and any political lenience.

"No one should be above the law."
