CID told to obtain medical report

Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena yesterday directed Criminal Investigation Department officials to obtain a report from the Judicial Medical Officer in connection with the medical condition of Gamini Ranawake of Colombo in remand custody for allegedly using the Buddha's pictures on women's clothing through the Internet.

Attorney-at-Law Amal Randeniya who appeared with Prasantha Lal de Alwis requested Court to direct the CID to investigate to ascertain which organisation is working with Ranawake who is an engineer, to send the pictures through the Internet.

Earlier on an application by the CID the Judge remanded Ranawake till October 7 pending the completion of investigations.

Nugegoda to get fly-over

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse who is also the Highways Minister inspected the proposed fly-over site to be built at Nugegoda junction following a Cabinet decision to ease traffic congestion along the High-level Road.

He inspected several places in Nugegoda where traffic conjestions is evident and advised Road Development Authority (RDA) officials to bring Nugegoda junction and the adjoining areas under a speedy reconstruction process. The Government will spend Rs. 600 million for the fly-over.

The Prime Minister ordered RDA officials to launch the project this year and to see it completed in two and half years time.

He advised the officials to see the possibilities to carry out construction without disturbing the traffic flow and possibilities of using pre-cast concrete structures. RDA and UDA officials toured the area with the Prime Minister.

Conference on human trafficking

The US Embassy in conjunction with the US State Department and US Department of Justice, will host a three-day conference beginning today, for criminal justice officers on ways to combat human trafficking and child exploitation, states a press release from the United States of America in Colombo.

Forty-five Sri Lankan judges, prosecutors and investigators will participate. The conference presenters include a US juvenile court judge, an assistant US attorney, and a US Federal bureau of Investigation special agent who will share best practices to provide justice in trafficking in persons cases.
