Lanka Cavaliers to tour Chennai

The Lanka Cavaliers, a pioneer veterans cricket club in Sri Lanka, will be embarking on a short tour of Chennai, India, to play a series of friendly matches on an invitation by International Fellowship of Cricket Loving Rotarians, R. I. Dist. 3230, Chennai.

The club team led by Sri Lanka's first 'Test Captain' Bandula Warnapura, who is also the present President of 'Cavaliers' will leave the island on September 26 where they will play three matches against a Rotarians XI, Madras C.C. Veterans XI and chennai veterans Invitation XI which includes some of their national players of yesteryear.

A couple of Training sessions will be conducted by the Lanka Cavaliers, incorporate with the Rotarian programs to help some schools in Annanagar, Chennai.

Joining the tour party will be Jayantha Seneviratne (former national player), Basil Perera, S. Illangaratnam, Mervyn and Damien Fernando, Daya Sirisena, Dr. Ananda Gunasekera, Jayalath Aponso, C. P. P. Raj, Premlal Fernando, Wasantha Lal Fernando, Rupanath Wickramaratne, Senaka Angulugha, (All whom have played State, Board and 1st class cricket), Srinath Wijeyeratne (Club Secretary cum player) and Lakith Peiris (Imm Past President).

K. Mathivanan, a former Jaffna Hartley College, Saracens S. C. Cricket and the Chairman, MD of East West Marketing, suppliers of "MILGRO" milk who is the sponsor of the club and the tour, will be joining the tour party mid way. Notable absentees are the regular players Keerthi Gunaratne, Bandula De Silva, Shabir Asgerally, Tony Gunawardena, Mahesh Jayasekera, K. H. Nandasena, Wouterz brothers Gerry and Desmond all involved with local commitments and club coaching duties.

Cavaliers club was formed in 1996 after a suggestion made by the former cricketers who played during the '70's for schools and then followed up with 'Sara' and national level, to meet regularly and renew their fellowship. This resulted in Bandula Warnapura, Basil Perera, Fernando brothers Mervyn and Damien, Jayantha Seneviratne and Gerry Wouterz inaugurating the club.

Since then it has really kept to the meaning of their motto "Cricket for Peace, Service and Goodwill" playing friendly games in all parts of the island and conducting coaching programmes in the outstations.
