Thamilselvan refuses to release home-guards by Ranil Wijayapala The issues relating to the release of two home-guards and the Nagarkovil Forward Defence Line remains unresolved as LTTE Political Wing leader S. P. Thamilselvan refused either to release the two home-guards or to pull back the Nagarkovil FDL despite SLMM Chief taking up the issues with him on Tuesday night. Chief of Nordic Truce Monitors Major Gen (Rtd) Trond Furuhovde met S. P. Thamilselvan prior to leaving the island on a three week visit in Europe on Tuesday night to take up the issues relating to the two home-guards, Nagarkovil FDL issue and the killing of political opponents. Thamilselvan has told the SLMM Chief that the two home-guards abducted from Gomarankadawala in Trincomalee can be released only after going through the LTTE judicial process, Deputy SLMM Chief Hagrup Haukland told the Daily News yesterday. "We are following the situation regarding the release of the two home-guards", Haukland added. Haukland said the SLMM will soon convene a meeting between the Sri Lanka Army and the LTTE area commanders in Jaffna to resolve the Nagar kovil FDL issue .Thamilselvan has told the SLMM Chief that it was up to the area commanders to resolve this matter. Earlier, the SLMM proposed a pull back of the FDLs both by the Army and the LTTE to maintain a standard distance between the two FDLs. The Government rejected the proposal saying that it was not ready to pull back the FDL since it was not the Security Forces that moved the FDL towards the 'no mans' lands . "We will come out with a new set of proposals after a meeting between the Sri Lanka Army and LTTE area leaders in Nagarkovil", Haukland added. |
