Amity School National Peace Camps a success

When President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga launched the Amity School concept in 2001, she intended not only that students all over the country should have access to English medium education, but also that this project would bring together children of different communities who otherwise found it difficult to communicate.

Though the project was continued over the last few years, the latter ideal could not be pursued.

The Education Ministry recently requested schools to organise camps which bring together children of different communities.

The English Quality Development Teams set up in each Province have already commenced programs and the Central Province recently conducted a camp which brought together students of five schools in the region, with representation of students from all ethnic groups, the Ministry said yesterday.

Trinity College Kandy, organised a camp last week at the Penideniya Training College, where students of 10 schools from different provinces came together to learn and play. There were students from Jaffna and Batticaloa and from Nugawela and Peradeniya Central Schools in the Kandy district, as well as from five schools from Colombo. This was organised on a Ministry request.

The program was arranged by the Vice Principal of Trinity College with the support of several members of his staff and their spouses who contributed in kind to help ensure that the cost of the camp was kept low.

A feature of the camp, which had originally been intended for boys only since many of the participating schools are single sex, was the presence of eight girls from Nugawela Central. They were divided into various groups, and participated actively in all the games and activities.

The Ministry's English Unit has produced a booklet that describes various enrichment activities that schools can undertake, and is encouraging schools all over the country to develop initiatives in this field.
