Another victory for Sri Lanka Sri Lanka recorded their second straight victory in the men's Indoor World Cup cricket tournament when they outplayed United Arab Emirates by 84 runs in their group match played at the Austasia Sports Complex in Thalawathugoda yesterday. The Lankans once again put up a splendid batting performance to make 115 runs from their 16 overs thanks to fine contributions from inform batsman Thushendra Zoysa (23), Iroshan de Silva (31), Chryshantha Peiris (20) and Tharindu Mendis (17). The Lankans then produced an even a better display on the field to restrict their opponents to 31 runs from their 16 overs. The best effort for the United Arab Emirates team came from their last pair of R. Khatri (15) and M. Khan (27). Chryshantha Peiris returned the best bowling figures of four wickets for minus one run with the back up support coming from Sachindra Gonaduwa (4 for minus 3), Asela Pathirana (3 for 2) and Thushendra Zoysa (3 for 6). The Sri Lanka women's team however suffered a 116 run defeat at the hands of England in their second match of the tournament. The Sri Lankans batting first managed to score only 34 runs from their 16 overs F. Fernando hitting a top score of 19 runs. Dalby (3 for 4), Olive (4 for minus 5), Dulane (3 for 4) and Coleman (3 for minus 2) did the damage for Australia. The Australians in reply easily overtook Sri Lanka's total and went on to score 150 runs from their 16 overs. Dulane (23), Olive (27) and Coleman (24) did the bulk of the scoring. (C.D.) |
