by Malmi Sellahannadi A Traffic policeman was run over and killed by a private passenger bus while directing traffic at Baseline Road. The victim PC Kadirage Gunaratne (42) was first knocked by the bus and thrown for a distance before being run over by the same vehicle. He died while being removed to the Colombo National Hospital. The bus was plying from Kadawata to Colombo. The incident took place at around 11.45 am on Tuesday. The bus was driven by the conductor at the time. This was revealed at the inquest held into the death of Traffic PC 22953 Kadirage Gunarathne of Polgahawela, Meegahathenna. Egodawatta Kankanamlage Chandralatha, victim's wife and a mother of three giving evidence before City Coroner Edward Ahangama said she was told that her husband was on duty with another policeman called Abeysinghe. The suspect driver Suranga Sampath Samaraweera, the conductor had driven the bus. The suspect was in possession of only a temporary licence. PC Abeysinghe was admitted to the Police hospital according to Police Inspector Wajira who gave evidence. The City Coroner Edward Ahangama returned a verdict of accidental death by multiple injuries to the body from being run over by a vehicle. The post-mortem was held by Dr. Ramesh Alagiyawanna. Evidence was led by Grandpass police. The City Coroner put off the inquest for October 30. |
