French multi-sport adventure rally here for first time

by Anjana Gamage

The world's largest multi- sport adventure rally exclusively reserved for women is now being held in Sri Lanka for the first time with the participation of more than 230 French female tourists, Sri Lanka Tourist Board (SLTB) sources told the Daily News.

An official attached to the French Marketing Division of SLTB said that this is the first time that Sri Lanka is hosting this popular annual event in the French calendar, Vittel from October 9 to 14."

Over 230 French female tourists arrived in Sri Lanka last week, to participate in this sports event titled Vittel Raid Amazones 2004.

The adventure race which commenced from Negombo will cover Kandalama, Kandy and other tourist attractions in the hill capital. Canoeing, running, biking, hiking and catamarans are the sports events that have been scheduled during their six day tour in Sri Lanka.

According to Hubert Colaris, Economic and Commercial Counsellor of the French Trade Commission in Sri Lanka, after extensive research and review, Vittel, the main sponsor of the event chose Sri Lanka as the venue for the mega sports event this year.

"There is a big demand for adventure travel in France. Therefore the adventure race would be telecast live and will be given a full coverage in the electronic and print media in France.

This would greatly help to project Sri Lanka's image in France as an attractive and diverse tourist destination. As a result it will help to boost the local tourism industry worldwide", SLTB sources said.

The main objective is to project the different aspects that Sri Lanka can offer to the world and reinforce Sri Lanka positioning beyond its beaches to nature and adventure as well, sources said.

Vittel Amazones Raid 2004 is organised by Vittel, a prominent water bottling company in France in collaboration with the Tourist Board in Sri Lanka.
