by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi Health authorities yesterday decided to transfer a surgeon and four nurses at the Colombo National Hospital (CNH) to different units as a preliminary measure following the release of the report of an inquiry into a fracas between the surgeon and nurses at the Accident Service of the CNH. The Inquiry Committee was appointed by the Director General of Health Services. "According to the preliminary report, one surgeon and four nurses have been found fault with and as an initial step, they will be transferred to different units at the same hospital," a senior Ministry official told the Daily News. The decision has been conveyed by the Secretary of the Healthcare and Nutrition to the Director of the Colombo National Hospital. However, the official said the inquiry would continue as all those found fault with could not be punished through a preliminary inquiry. "Presently explanations will be called from all those identified with the incident and action will be taken accordingly," the official added. The committee comprises two Ministry officials namely Dr. P. G. Mahipala (Director of Tertiary Health Care) and Somaratne Pathirana (Director - Special Investigations). They were appointed on Tuesday to look into the dispute between a surgeon and a nurse, which crippled normal services at the Intensive Care Unit of the Colombo National Hospital. The incident involving a consultant surgeon and a nurse had occurred in the night last Monday. However, nurses at the CNH staged a strike last Friday demanding the authorities to swiftly provide the report of the Ministerial Committee. The strike was called off on Saturday as the authorities had agreed to provide the committee report by Wednesday. |
