by Asanga Warnakulasuriya Although the Traffic Police came under fire from the public for introducing a uniflow traffic system on Galle Road and Duplication Road, City Traffic SSP Y. G. R. M. Lafir claims that the trial run was a success and hopes to carry out the second one in the near future. Speaking to the Daily News, the SSP said: "There were a few problems during our first trial which was carried out last Sunday and Monday, mainly due to the inadequate knowledge of the drivers. But overall the uniflow system was praised by many, specially motorists. "One could except public protests against a new system but it has to be implemented to cope up with increasing number of vehicles entering Colombo," the SSP said. Contradicting reports that the uniflow system was temporally suspended due to public protests, the SSP said Police chose only Sunday and Monday for the trial. We selected Sunday and Monday to study how the uniflow system responds to the least and highest number of vehicles. Traffic moved smoothly on Sunday and Monday early morning until hundreds of school vans entered Colombo. We had a few problems at Peterson Avenue and R. A. De Mel Mawatha. Even though most drivers were aware of the new system, they had practical difficulties in the live environment, the SSP added. We will rectify the problems identified in our first trial run and will conduct another one as soon as superiors give the green light, the SSP said. |
