'Ship Mate' to streamline Lanka's shipping and Maritime industry

by Sudarshana Perera

The Indian Register of Shipping will help develop Sri Lanka's shipping and maritime industry and the Shipping giant will implement its new IT applications "Ship Mate"for Sri Lankan owned vessels very soon. The goodwill to support the local shipping industry follows the international interest taken in Sri Lanka due to its strategic location and resources that are ideal for maritime technology, ship building and repairs.

Chairman of the Indian Register of Shipping, Capt, J.C. Anand who was in the country said that the maritime and shipping industry is shifting from West to East and hence Sri Lanka should make use of the trend to harness its industry to attract more vessels and to own more ships.

Anand said that India will extend its fullest cooperation to train human resources in Sri Lanka in the maritime and shipping business and added that the country is on right track towards its development.

"We are very optimistic that Sri Lanka will go for new horizons as the country has talented human resources", he said.

The new software, he said the first of its kind in the world is aimed at providing the ship's crew with the information they need to manage the safety of their ships.

"Ship Mate gives the crew information about the stability of the ship, in both floating and grounded conditions.

If the ship is grounded or damaged, Ship_Mate informs the crew about the likely problems caused by the water flowing in and what effect any proposed remedial action may have", he said. "We are here to introduce our latest technology on a priority basis in Sri Lanka and Ship Mate is useful in normal conditions too as it provides information on corrosion levels in tanks and holds, and identifies any structural components that need to be renewed", said Chief Surveyor of the Indian Register of Shipping, Sudesh Kumar.

The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) is an internationally recognised independent ship classification society, founded in India in 1975. IRS provides professionally competent, completely independent and highly efficient third party technical inspection and certification services for all types of marine craft and structures. These services have also been expanded to cover a range of offshore and industrial projects.
