Serendib Horticulture completes five years Serendib Horticulture Technologies (Pvt) Ltd. one of the most dynamic companies in the Floriculture sector has completed five years of operations since its formation. Since taking over from Ceylon Tobacco Company in 1999 October, Dilip de Silva and his team of managers have worked hard to achieve what they are today, said the Administrative Manager, Associations Secretariat H. B. Tennekoon. He said the company with dedicated managers and a dedicated workforce have more than doubled the turnover in real teams over the past five years expanded its market network to be one of the strongest in Japan, Denmark and Holland and making roads into the North American market, giving employment to many in the Gampaha district and earning valuable foreign exchange to the country. Serendib Horticulture Technologies has the total portfolio in Floriculture with exports of live plants, tissue culture plants and flower bulbs. The extent of foliage under cultivation has been increased by 25 acres over the past two years in the Chilaw district. It now has a total of 70 acres under cultivation. The tissue culture laboratory which is the biggest and the most successful commercial laboratory in Sri Lanka exporting over 2.0 million plants per year is expanding its operations off shore. Tennekoon said the company has ventured out into research and development with effective public-private partnerships with the universities and the Department of Agriculture on various research projects in diverse areas in horticulture. Developments of new varieties of Floriculture products, breeding and seed production are some of the areas of development that the company has undertaken. In one of the most ambitious ventures undertaken by a Floriculture company in Sri Lanka, Serendib Horticulture Technologies have got into a joint-venture with a company in the Middle East to expand its operations in the Middle East. With a vision of forming a centre of excellence in Horticulture production and research utilising the technical expertise in Sri Lanka which would result in doubling exports from Sri Lanka over the next three years, he said. |
