Rubber planting on the increase in Kalutara by Anjana Samarasinghe A senior official of the Rubber Development Department in the Kalutara district said there is a rapid increase in rubber replanting and new planting in the district. Nearly 1,275 acres have been replanted and 675 acres have been used for new planting, she said. When America released their rubber stocks to the world market rubber prices came down. But now there is a huge demand for rubber and rubber prices have increased, she said. An year ago local rubber manufacturers paid Rs. 30 per kilogramme. At present a kilogramme fetches Rs. 120, she said. Many rubber planters in Ratnapura, Galle and Kagalle have started replanting and while others have taken to new planting, she said. In our district we have provided nearly 9,100 rubber plants for these planters. Apart from supplying plants we also, provide subsidies and fertiliser they require, she said. The total rubber output in the last eight months was 67,166 metric tonnes. In September this year 4,008 hectares were used for replanting and 189 hectares came under new planting, according to the Rubber Development Department's latest statistics. According to the Central Bank Annual report there were 564 hectares of replanted rubber lands and 450 hectares of new plantations in 2003. |
