Ananda Gunasekara, Sri Lanka's ambassador in France and permanent delegate to the UNESCO who introduced the motion on behalf of the whole group presented in detail the adverse effects of using religious symbols by certain individuals or marketing organizations through sheer lack of awareness. This move proposed by Minister Mangala Samaraweera at the inaugural session on October 4, 2004 will ready UNESCO into a playing a more pro-active role in safeguarding the sensitivities of peoples of varied cultural or religious groups thereby opening new avenues for inter communal harmony. |
