by Manjula Fernando Japanese Special Envoy on peace building, rehabilitation and reconstruction Yasushi Akashi will arrive in Sri Lanka next week to hold another round of discussions with the Government and the LTTE in a bid to revive the stalled peace talks. The Foreign Ministry confirmed his arrival in the country next week but did not disclose his itinerary during the forthcoming visit. In the face of growing international pressure on the LTTE to come to the negotiating table ending all types of violence and killings of political opponents, this visit will be crucial to the resumption of peace talks, diplomatic sources said. The Government has expressed that it was ready for talks anytime given the final solution to the issue is also discussed along with the LTTE proposals. However, the LTTE is yet to relay a positive signal for the Government's call. This will be his second visit to Sri Lanka this year. During his first visit in mid-May Akashi met all key stakeholders of the peace process including the minority party leaders, the TNA and SLMC. After visiting Kilinochchi to hold discussions with the LTTE political wing leader S.P. Thamilselvan the envoy briefed the President of his discussions with the LTTE representative. He also met Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar and the Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe. |
