Downpour claims three of one family

Three members of the same family were killed on the spot when the walls of their home collapsed during Monday night's heavy lightening and rainstorm at Nagahawatte in the Kirulapone police area.

A nearby lamp post which was hit by lightening had also fallen on to the same house,police said.

The victims were the only members of the family present at the time, Police said. The dead were Sisira Priyalal Samaraweera (38), his wife Mary Margaret (37) and their 14-year-old son Niroshan. According to investigations directed by Colombo DIG Sirisena Herath and conducted by Senior SP Gamini Seneviratne, the lightning had struck on to the wall which had then collapsed.

Assisted by neighbours, the Kirulapone police had removed the three bodies to the Colombo National Hospital mortuary.

ASP Cyril Fernando with Chief Inspector Suresh Warnasooriya, OIC, Kirulapone assisted by SI D.H. Ranasinghe, OIC Crimes Kirulapone are investigating.
