Sri Lanka was elected to chair the Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on follow-up to the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) at the First Regional Conference on preparation for the second phase of the WSIS to be held in Tunis in November 2005. Sri Lanka's delegation to the First Regional Conference was led by Secretary to the Prime Minister Lalith Weeratunga and Secretary, Ministry of Information and Media W.B. Ganegala. Weeratunga chaired the two-day EGM, which was attended by over 48 countries and a large number of International Agencies. Sri Lanka was also elected as Vice Chairperson at the Sub-committee on Information, Communication and Space Technology (ICST) that followed the EGM. Both these events were held at the UNESCAP headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand from October 11 to 15. With the objective of building an Information Society, a global challenge in the new Millennium, in accordance with the decision of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council and the UN General Assembly, a two-phase process comprising the World Summit on Information Society, Geneva phase, which was held in Geneva, 2003 to adopt the declaration of principles and the plan of action to be followed by WSIS at Tunis in 2005 was adopted. This procedure for the World Summit was adopted to evaluate the progress in implementation of the Geneva declaration of principles and plan of action with particular attention to least developed countries and internet Governance and financial mechanisms for bridging the digital divide at the Tunis phase of the WSIS, a press release said. |
