Internationally famed, Sri Lankan born Criminologist, Professor C. H. S. Jayewardene died on Sunday in Canada at the age of 76 years. Educated at Trinity College Kandy and obtaining his Medical degree at the Colombo University's Faculty of Medicine, he proceeded to the United States where he obtained a double Doctorate in Medicine and Law. After a brief stint as a lecturer in Forensic Medicine and Sociology at the Colombo and Peradeniya Universities he served for many years at the University of Ottawa in Canada as Professor of Criminology and as Vice Chancellor there. He was a close friend, associate and advisor of former Canadian Prime Minister Pierie Trudeau and an Advisor to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The author of several books on a wide range of topics on Criminology and Forensic Medicine and on Canada and Sri Lanka including "Terror in Paradise - The battle for Eelam", Professor Jayewardene was considered an authority and specialist in Criminology and Forensic Medicine and was much sort after, consulted and quoted internationally on Forensic matters all over the world. Son of the late Kuliyapitiya Crown Proctor Francis H. Jayewardene and Mrs. Jayewardene he was married to his Medical College mate Dr. Hilda Jayewardene nee Ranasinha who predeceased him a few years earlier and in whose memory he donated the Ottawa Vihara. His remains were cremated privately yesterday (Tuesday) according to his wishes at Pine Crest, Canada. |
