Govt. to implement program to facilitate Dhamma schools

Today various individuals and organizations are active to mislead children for all kinds of nefarious activities. Devious methods adopted by liquor shops in close proximity to schools, to induce children to patronize them can be sited as a classic example, said Minister of Urban Development and Water Supply and Deputy Minister of Higher Education Dinesh Gunawardena.

The Minister was speaking at a ceremony to distribute educational equipment to economically handicapped children selected from the Dhamma schools in the Avissawella sasanarakshaka area and held at the Philip Gunawardena Memorial Sudaraka Hall in Mawathagama recently.

The event was organized by the Kelani Kusum Kantha organization in association with the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna Women's Organisation to coincide with the World Children's Day. The Minister was the chief guest on the occasion. He said, the only viable force that can withstand such approaches, it should be emphasized, are the parents.

The services rendered by the Dhamma schools to counter these evil influences are enormous and cannot be underestimated. In this respect, I take great pleasure in announcing that the Government will implement a program to facilitate the Dhamma school teachers and students in the very near future, the Minister said.

"We have already taken measures to close the tuition shops on Sundays to assist the Sunday Daham schools even though it may hurt the owners of these tuition shops.

"It should be said emphatically, whoever that may get hurt, this Government would not hurt our children", he said.

The Mahajana Eksath Peramuna organizer for Avissawella and the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Gitanjana Gunawardena, Sasanarakshaka of Hewagamkorale East Ven. Manakada Kanampelle Piyananda, Secretary of the Kelani Kusum Kantha Organization Padmini Padmaperuma, President Iddagoda, former Pradeshiya Sabha member R.A. Piyasena and many parents and students of the Dhamma school participated.
