The proposed Lands Act introduced by the former UNP Government resulted in locals losing their lands to foreigners, he said. The Minister made these observations at the Institute of Surveying and Mapping Convocation (ISMC)-2004 of the Sri Lanka Survey Department held at the ISMC Mahaweli auditorium, Diyatalawa recently. At this ceremony, Surveying and Mapping degrees were awarded to 160 graduates. No Government that came to power after independence has formulated a National Lands Policy based on a scientific study to develop the country. Therefore, the Agriculture and Lands Ministry has now commenced this process. "I request you all who have passed this placement test and obtained the National Surveying and Mapping degree to solicit your contribution to make this national endeavour a success. In order to build the nation, the country needs a powerful survey service which can effectively utilise resources such as rivers and streams, waterfalls and lands for development. The society expects this service from you," the Minister said. |
