JETRO assists Lankan ICT firms to enter Japan

by Sudarshana Perera

The business and ICT communities in Japan in partnership with The Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) Japan-Colombo and Genesys Corporation will assist Sri Lankan ICT companies to enter the Japanese market and set up potential joint ventures.

The initiative will allow Sri Lankan ICT companies to expand its wings to Japan and this effort comes in the wake of Japanese realising the software skills of the Sri Lankan ICT companies and its ability to provide solutions for e-Japanese strategy.

A workshop was conducted recently in Colombo by JETRO with a high level Japanese delegation to educate the Sri Lankan ICT community on ways to enter the Japanese market and facilities for investors.

The Resident Representative to JETRO in Colombo , Yasuuki Ishiga said that collaborative management between business is a vital part of the next generation business model in Japan and added that Sri Lanka could cater to Japanese engineering software market.

"There is vast potential for foreign companies to establish development and training centres in Japan and systems integration market is a thriving business there.

Sri Lanka should try to introduce products that are new to the Japanese market The market for engineering software products consists of four enterprise product categories such as CAD/CAM,PDM,EAI and B2B collaboration tools", Ishiga said.

He said that since January 2001, when the IT Strategic Headquaters finalised the e-Japan Strategy" a basic strategy aimed at making Japan the most advanced IT nation in the world, the Japanese government made a committed effort to set up a solid infrastructure."Sri Lankan companies could showcase their software building skills in Japan and we are fully committed to facilitate your effort.", he said.

Speaking on the joint venture with Japanese companies , he said foraying companies have succeeded in selling products for Japanese engineering industry and are engaged in marketing activities. These activities include visiting clients to introduce products, consulting, strengthening partnerships with dealers and systems integrators.

The Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) has again dramatically changed its course in response to the evolving needs of the Japanese economy.

Established in 1958 by the Japanese government as a special public institution to implement trade policy, JETRO spent its first two decades essentially promoting exports to help build the Japanese economy.

Later, as Japan's trade surplus grew to unprecedented levels, JETRO concentrated on helping foreign companies enter the Japanese market. In 1998, the organisation substantially upgraded its research ability by merging with the Institute of Developing Economies (IDE).
