Celltel expands GSM network islandwide Celltel commenced a major GSM expansion program in September, whichwill continue till the first quarter of 2005. "Our fifth phase of expansion will result in adding GSM capacity and expanding GSM outstation coverage by as much as 250%," Celltel CEO Dumindra Ratnayake told a press briefing yesterday at the Colombo Hilton. A new switch has been commissioned which has an expansion capability of up to 10 million subscribers. At the base station level, it will be configured to increase channels by 40% in existing coverage areas, while each tower will increase its transmitting power so that the signals will reach beyond its existing area. "What this means is that customers who currently experience poor signals would start receiving better and stronger signals", Ratnayake said. The current BSCs (Base Station Controller) are being expanded and upgraded with the latest B7 software, and two new BSCs are being added to accommodate the base stations that will be installed during this expansion phase. Eighty-five new base stations will be added in this phase, taking Celltel's coverage to new parts of the island including the North and East. Celltel's Commercial Director, Aniljit Singh said that customers seeking the most value-based product will now have access in 85 new areas to Celltel's popular prepay brand, CellCARD. Celltel's total investment todate is over US$ 85 million. |
