President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has appointed a committee to probe allegations against Mahaweli, River Basin Development and Rajarata Development Minister Maithripala Sirisena on his request, the Presidential Secretariat said yesterday. President Kumaratunga has informed Agriculture Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who has levelled the allegations, to submit all matters related to the allegations to the committee within one week for their perusal. In a letter to the President, Minister Sirisena said charges levelled against him that he was extending patronage to a fraudulent racket were completely false and misleading. The charges have been made with malicious intent to defame his character and reputation, he said. |
