Dr. Tara de Mel does not receive payments from President's Office

The President's Office is not paying any allowances to Dr. Tara de Mel, the Presidential Secretariat said yesterday.

The Secretariat said that Dr. De Mel, the Education Secretary, was also not receiving any other allowances or benefits from the President's Office as an advisor to the President.

Recent news items in certain sections of the media have stated that "Dr. de Mel who advises the President on activities connected with social infrastructure receives a monthly allowance of Rs.30,000 as well as a vehicle and 190 litres of diesel."

The Secretariat said that these payments are no longer made to Dr. De Mel. "Dr. de Mel now is the Secretary to the Ministry of Education. After Dr. de Mel's current appointment, this office has not paid any allowances to her nor has she received any other benefits."
