Parents must guide children on correct path - DIG

Parents should be more concerned about the activities of their children to ensure that they do not go astray, said Colombo DIG H. Sirisena Herath recently.

DIG Sirisena said there were individuals and organisations who lured children for sexual activities. Parents should be on guard to prevent their children from being inveigled to these immoral activities.

Speaking at a function held at Grandpass to mark the formation of the Amaraindu Sansadaya, a youth brigade opposed to alcohol, drugs and lawlessness on the roads, Herath said narcotics has become a scourge that is destroying the lives of the younger generation.

The DIG disclosed that police generally arrest around 2,000 drug addicts and pushers a month. There are 12,000 drugs offenders in jail. This was a far cry from the 1980s when only a few drugs and drug addicts were detected. He commended the youth in Grandpass for getting together to form an alliance against various vices. They could play a role in educating the public on staying away from these vices.

He said the Government has strengthened laws related to children. A sound education was very important for children. It will help them to veer away from vices.

He pointed out that children who have not received education fall prey to these vices more easily. The parents must bear this in mind and take steps to educate their children.

The DIG said child pornography rings posed a great danger to children. These rings dupe children through various means and finally coerce them to act in pornographic films which are distributed to paedophiles worldwide. Parents must be wary of these rings.

Herath said the law of the jungle should not be allowed to overrun civilisation. Rape and child abuse have become commonplace. Children should receive the guidance of religious dignitaries and parents who can inculcate moral values in them.
