Massive stolen vehicle racket busted

The Intelligence Division of the Pettah Police Station yesterday uncovered a massive stolen vehicle racket following the arrest of the king pin of the racket.

Investigations directed by Colombo DIG Sirisena Herath and conducted by Colombo Central Senior SP Lucky Dissanayake revealed the suspect now in custody was employed as a driver in several leading business establishments.

Working for several weeks in one business place the driver used to vanish with the vehicle. Later the driver now in custody with the assistance of another car centre owner used to sell the vehicle in the LTTE control areas.

Investigations also revealed that the suspect used to play casino from the money he collected from the illegal sale of stolen vehicle.

A special team led by SI Akila Ranasinghe yesterday arrested the suspect while he was attempting to sell a stolen luxury vehicle for a sum of Rs. 700,000.

After recording the statement of the suspect, he will be produced before court today, ASP Premalal Ranagala said.

Colombo Central ASP Premalal Ranagala is assisting in the investigations with Chief Inspector Cyril Wijesena, OIC, Pettah Police, SI Wasantha, Sergeant Sanath, Constables Siriwardena and Ranatunga of the Pettah Police.
