JHU lay members given two weeks time to
fall in line

by Chamikara Weerasinghe

Spokesperson and Parliamentarian of Jathika Hela Urumaya Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera yesterday announced that the Supreme Sangha Council of Jathika Hela Urumaya would take a final decision regarding the present lay members of the Sihala Urumaya, if they keep continuing with their confrontation with the Bhikku members in the party.

Admitting that there had been internal clashes between former Sihala Urumaya members and the JHU's Central Committee members, Ven. Dhammaloka thera said that the Supreme Sangha Council had given them two weeks to settle their conflicts amicably.

The Thera was speaking at a press conference, held at the Mahaweli Centre, Colombo 7, to explain the JHU's current position following the exit of JHU MP Ven. Kolonnawe Sumangala Thera (MP), its former General Secretary Thilak Karunaratne, and Administrative Organiser Udaya Gammanpila. The situation is reported to have led to internal clashes within the party.

The monk MPs of the JHU, Ven. Udawatte Nanda Thera, Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka thera, Ven. Athuraliye Rathana thera, and Ven. Akmeemana Dayarathana thera were present at the press conference.

Commenting on Ven. Kolonnawe thera's leaving the party, Dhammaloka thera said, "Ven. Sumangala thera left the party under tremendous pressure, and I'm sure he would make a fine spiritual leader."

However, Ven. Dhammaloka thera said, "I will not resign from the party under any circumstances for I am duty bound to fulfil the task which we have undertaken on behalf of the people of this country."

The JHU monk MPs said that the Sihala Urumaya members in the party should be able to rise above all differences and strive to work with the Maha Sangha through the facilitation of the Advisory Committee appointed by them.

The Advisory Committee is headed by Professor Chandra Wickramage.
