by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi The Cardiology Unit of the Colombo National Hospital is functioning as usual without any problems, its Director Dr. Hector Weerasinghe told the Daily News yesterday. Refuting certain newspaper reports (not in the Lake House Group), Dr. Weerasinghe said the particular unit is functioning as usual and heart surgeries are being performed without delay. He said out of the three Consultant Anaesthetics attached to this unit, two have not reported for duty as one is on leave following an accident while the other had gone abroad for medical treatment. "The remaining Consultant Anaesthetic has covered the bulk of the work of other two Consultants too. With much difficulty, she has been managing the work." Dr. Weerasinghe said during the last week alone, 19 heart surgeies were performed. "This is a sufficient number as the operations have been performed at the rate of 3 - 4 per day and this is similar to the number of operations we are doing on a normal day." he added. He also noted that the CNH had shown superb performance in heart surgery operations over the years. "Last year also, we have done a record number of 1,000 heart surgeries."he added. |
