Probe LTTE Trinco military build-up further by Ranil Wijayapala The Defence Ministry yesterday informed the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) to inquire further into the LTTE military build up around Trincomalee harbour since the Ministry cannot agree with the report submitted by them in this regard, Defence Secretary Cyril Herat told the Daily News yesterday. Herat conveyed this message to SLMM Chief Trond Furuhovde at a meeting yesterday. "We provided additional information to the SLMM to further inquire into the matter since we feel that the report submitted by the SLMM was lacking some information," Herat said. He said the Defence Ministry has information from the intelligence reports and also from other sources about the existence LTTE camps in those areas. "We do not agree with the SLMM that there are no LTTE camps around the Trincomalee harbour," Herat added. The SLMM following a complaint lodged by the Defence Ministry regarding the alleged LTTE military build up around Trincomalee harbour began investigations into the matter and handed over their report to the Peace Secretariat a few weeks back. The Peace Secretariat later handed over the report to the Defence Ministry for its consideration. During a months long investigation, the truce monitors have visited the places where the alleged LTTE installations were reported to have been located. However, truce monitors could not visit three places which were alleged to be located deep inside the jungle. In their report, the SLMM indicated that all the LTTE installations the truce monitors visited were located well within the LTTE controlled areas and the truce monitors had not found any indication of an LTTE military build up around the harbour. |
