20 terrorists killed in Pakistan's tribal area ISLAMABAD, Tuesday (Xinhua) Pakistani military said that some 20 terrorists have been killed in the country's tribal area over the past two weeks, according to private News Network International. A religious seminary in the South Waziristan tribal area bordering Afghanistan was dismantled. It was used as a hub of terrorist activities and miscreants had been launching frequent attacks from it against the security forces, said a military spokesman. Pakistan has been engaged in a large-scale operation against suspected foreign militants in South Waziristan since March. It believes hundreds of foreign militants are holed up in the region. During the ongoing search operation in South Waziristan launched since Nov. 8, the security forces after achieving initial objectives have cleared all those areas which were under the control of miscreants a few days back, the spokesman said.. He added that during the operation, huge quantity of medicines and surgery-related equipment had been discovered and ammunition including over 900 rockets and heavy weapons like recoilless rifles and mortars had also been discovered. The Pakistani security forces are now targeting Abdullah Mehsud, a militant chief and a former Guantanamo Bay prisoner. Mehsud is believed to be the mastermind of kidnapping two Chinese engineers last month. One of the hostages died in a rescue attempt by the Pakistani forces and the other was freed. |
