by Nadira Gunatilleke Sri Lanka has an AIDS population nearing 3,500 according to statistics compiled as at the end of 2003. Of this number about 100 are between the ages of 15 to 49. The latest statistics were released by the National STD/AIDS Control Program of the Department of Health Services. The statistics up to end of 2003 show the number of Sri Lankans living with HIV/AIDS is about 3,500. The recorded number of deaths is just under 100. The number of reported AIDS deaths in 2004 up to the third quarter is five and the number of HIV cases reported by the third quarter, 2004 is 39. The number of cumulative HIV cases at the end of the third quarter is 591. The number of cumulative AIDS cases at the end of the third quarter is 174. The number of cumulative AIDS deaths reported is 129. The number of cumulative perinatal transmitted cases reported is 12. The cumulative foreign HIV cases reported is 54 and the number of HIV tests carried out during 2003 was 256,435. HIV sero-positive rate for 2003 is 0.03 per cent. Around 40 million people in the world are affected with HIV/AIDS. Nearly half of them are women. About 20 million people have already died from AIDS. So far about 27 HIV positive cases have been reported from the Jaffna peninsular. These statistics were made during a press briefing held at the Galle Face Hotel, Colombo yesterday in connection with the World AIDS Day celebration to be held on December 1 at the Viharamahadevi Open Air Theatre. There will be an exhibition at the same venue on the same day. The event will be organised by the AIDS Coalition for Care, Education and Support Services. |
