by Uditha Kumarasinghe Development activities in relation to agriculture, livestock, lands and irrigation sectors in the North-East province at a standstill for the past several years as a result of the war are to be immediately recommenced under a new systematic plan drawn up by the Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation Ministry. The Ministry under this new development mechanism has taken measures to rebuild the Chavakachcheri Veterinary Office destroyed in the war, before the year end. The Ministry will also modernise and provide facilities to other veterinary offices in the Jaffna district, a Ministry spokesman told the Daily News yesterday. The Ministry will also fill all 49 vacancies of veterinary surgeons in the North-East province within the first few months of next year, he said. Under the 1,000 dairy farmer village concept, the Ministry has made arrangements to establish 50 dairy farmer villages countrywide before the end of this year. Two such dairy farmer villages will be established in Point Pedro and Kopay in the Jaffna district. On a directive from Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake, a high level Ministry delegation made an inspection tour in the North from November 12 to 15 to study on the special livestock development projects to be implemented in the province and expedite other livestock development programs of the Ministry in Jaffna and other North-East areas. He said during this inspection tour, the Ministry officials had lengthy discussions at Jaffna District Secretariat particularly on the ways and means of developing the livestock development activities in Jaffna district considered as one of the key sources of income of the people in Jaffna. All Government officials representing the livestock sector attended this discussion chaired by Jaffna District Secretary A.Padmanathan. The Jaffna District Secretary who briefed the ministry officials on the problems faced by the livestock sector, said 13 veterinary offices are functioning in the Jaffna district. But many of these offices have faced various hardships for a long time due to lack of facilities and a dearth of veterinary surgeons. Dairy farmers have also faced difficulties in finding hybrid cattle varieties needed for the dairy industry. A decision was taken to implement a special livestock development plan for the Jaffna district. According to this program, steps were taken to modernise the veterinary offices in the Jaffna district, provide facilities for the dairy farmers, upgrade the Veterinary Research Centre in Jaffna and implement the dairy farmer village concept in the Jaffna district. |
