by Wasantha Ramanayake The Court of Appeal yesterday granted bail to former Co-operatives Minister and the UNP MP Abdul Cader. He was enlarged on bail in a sum of Rs. 100,000 with two sureties. The court further directed the suspect Abdul Cader to obtain the prior approval of the court to travel abroad. The Bench comprised Justices Gamini A. L. Abeyratne and S. I. Imam. State Counsel Rohantha Abeysuriya appeared for the respondents, the OIC Anti-Corruption Crime Investigation Unit and the, Attorney General. President's Counsel A. L. M. Ameen appearing for Abdhul Cader urged the court to enlarge the suspect under ceratin exceptional circumstances. The counsel submitted that his client had already spent four months in remand custody and the investigations into the allegations were almost over. He further submitted that his client was also ailing. State counsel Rohantha Abeysuriya for the Attorney General submitted that neither did he object nor consent to the suspect being granted bail since the petitioner's counsel had confined himself to exceptional grounds without raising the legal issues mentioned in the application. He submitted that the court could decide on its own whether or not the exceptional circumstances would warrant the suspect being granted bail. The Petitioner, a close relative of Abdul Cader filed the petition on behalf of the suspect. The petitioner stated in his petition that the suspect had been taken into custody allegedly in connection with misappropriation of one million rupees of Samurdhi Funds. President's Counsel M. L. M. Ameen appeared for Abdul Cader. State Counsel Rohantha Abeysuriya appeared for the AG. |
