Norwegian Ambassador Hans Brattskar addressing the 11th anniversary celebrations of the Hambantota district Chamber of Commerce (HDCC) on Saturday emphasised that the involvement of Norway in the Sri Lankan peace process was not their own initiative, but it was only on the invitation of the Sri Lankan Government and the LTTE they took a facilitator role to make way for the smooth progress of the peace process. Ambassador Brattskar reiterated that as far as both parties to the conflict continue to require their services to act as the facilitator in the peace process they were prepared to render their services. "I stress that we only play the role as facilitator as defined by the two parties and we will continue to work with them and offer our services, advice and encouragement as long as they continue to seek our assistance", he said. "Businessmen have a duty to create awareness about the value of peace among the members of the society in which they live. There is no definite formula for achieving or maintaining peace. There is no road maps that is clearly laid down for us. We must all work hard to create an atmosphere that will make it possible for the leaders of this country to make hard and difficult decisions necessary to bring the peace process forward and eventually to a successful conclusion, Ambassador Brattskar said. Vice Chancellor, University of Ruhuna, Prof. Ranjith Senarathna, HDCC Director General Azmi Thassim, President HDCC Ganesha Siriwardhana and several others also spoke. |
