Presidential Commission on Buddha Sasana has made very important recommendations - Speaker W. J. M. Lokubandara

Kuliyapitiya group correspondent

The Presidential Commission on Buddha Sasana has made very important recommendations. When those recommendations were implemented the problems relating to the Sasana would be solved. So we need not be pessimistic over the deterioration of the Sasana, the Speaker W. J. M. Loku Bandara said.

He was speaking at the Buddhist ceremony held in Nalawala Sri Seelarathanaramaya to mark the awarding of the credentials to Ven. Mellawa Seelawansa Thera on his being appointed the Chief Sangha Nayaka of Katugampola Hath Paththu with the honorary title 'Dharmakeerthi Sri Seelarathana".

The Speaker added that there were a host of erudite Buddhist scholars in the country. The Buddhists and Maha Sangha in other Eastern Buddhist countries had a very high regard on our Maha Sangha.

A Buddhist should follow the teachings of the Lord Buddha observing the five precepts. They should abstain from wrongs such as killing, stealing, committing adultery, uttering falsehood and consuming alcoholic drinks.

Wewai-Dagabai (the tank and the dagaba) is the foundation of our cultural heritage. That is our economic foundation was the Buddhist civilisation. In addition the base of our classical literature was the qualities of the life of the Lord Buddha. All those facts prove that our way of life is inseparable from Buddhist teachings. So whatever threats and challenges are there to the Buddha Sasana they would be overcome sooner or later.

Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeyeratna said that NGOs registered under the Company Act were selling the religions. That would be a challenge and a threat to Buddha Sasana. The Bhikkhus should uphold the honour and dignity of the Cheevaraya (robe). Their entering into politics had deteriorated the honour the Buddhists had to the Cheevaraya.

The Minister of Plantation Industries Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said that Ven. Mellawa Seelawansa Thera had rendered a yeoman service to the area giving the leadership to the people. He was a real leader who called a spade a spade. Even we politicians sought his advice on the problems and issues pertaining to the people in the area.

The Anu Nayaka of the Malwatta Chapter of Shamopali Maha Nikaya Ven. Niyangoda Wijithasiri Nayaka Thera said that the Karaka Sangha Sabha of the Malwatta Chapter took a unanimous decision on appointing Ven. Mellawa Seelawansa Thera as the Chief Sangha Nayaka of Katugampola Hath Paththuasa an evaluation of national, religious, educational and social services he rendered as a Bhikkhu during the last fifty years.

Wayamba Chief Sangha Nayaka of Asgiriya Chapter Ven. Dr. Thumbulle Seelakkhanda Nayaka, the Registrar General of Malwatta Chapter Ven. Divulkumbure Wimaladhamma Nayaka Thera, Ven. Kalugalpitiya Sujatha Thera, Kurunegala District MPs Gamini Jayawickrema Perera and Dayasiri Jayasekara, former Wayamba PC Member Ranjith Wijesiri and Gamini Munendra Witharana also spoke.
