NDB boosts Mercantile Tennis

National Development Bank has put its considerable weight behind the popular Mercantile Tennis tournament by being title sponsor of this year's tournament which in progress on the SLTA Courts.

Explaining the decision to support the event Nihal Welikala, Director/General Manager of NDB said "the NDB Group has been a keen participant in this tournament over the past several years, and this year, the bank is delighted to come forward as its principal sponsor. I wish the organisers and the players an excellent tournament."

SLTA President Suresh Subramaniam expressed delight with NDB's sponsorship of the event. Having a prestigious member of the corporate world like NDB involved in tennis is not only a boost to the Mercantile Tournament, but dare I say, to Sri Lanka tennis. It shows to the corporate sector that Sri Lanka tennis is a worthwhile investment," said Mr. Subramaniam. "I am hopeful that the other big name companies will follow NDB's example."

The extent of NDB's financial sport for the 2004 championship was not divulged but tournament officials described it as substantial.... more than bargained for. In return, NDB will be allowed to display courts side banners during the November 20-28 tournament to be staged at the SLTA, Green Path.

The tennis itself promises exciting fare and renews the on court rivalry between NDB and HSBC.

Over the past few years, the championship has as good as been a private dual between the two banks. In 2002 HSBC broke NDB's three-year hold on the title. Last year, however NDB won back the title last year, but, as always, by not much. The tournament will feature both men and women, each competing for the respective singles and doubles titles as well as the mixed doubles. For veteran events for men are also included singles and doubles for over 35 and over 45.

The participating teams - NDB Bank, SriLankan Airlines, World Tell, R & G Sports, Develop. Finance & Co., Sea World Ltd., Hector Pieterz, Nations Trust Bank, Brandix Ltd, Unichella Silver Line, Ceylon Printers Ltd, Seylan Bank, Suttle Computer Servicing, Trans Asia Hotel.
