London Calling by Mignonne Senaratne As the autumn leaves settled on the damp pavements of Marble Arch, the Old Thomians and not so old Bishopians flocked to engage in serious merrymaking in the elegant surroundings of Portman Square, situated in the heart of London. For the Thomians, opened their 22nd dinner dance with a witty speech by Warden Ponniah (who was on a private visit to London) which was refreshing and diverting. Festooned with balloons in blue and black, they danced the night away to the music of the inimitable Mike Cook and the Islanders. A robust and wide bill of fare with echoes of the 1970's was served - avocado & prawn mayonnaise, tomato and basil soup with Parmesan croutons, cream of mushroom soup with herb croutons to start proceedings; Salmon with a saffron crust with spinach cream sauce, breast of chicken with herb and mushrooms sauce, roast leg of lamb with a ragout of beans and a vegetarian alternative. Tarts were the order of the day where desserts went - white chocolate, lemon or apple. In his address, the President Deepal Ahangama said that these gatherings not only help old boys to network but they generated a lot of money - the Association in UK had made significant contributions - in 2003 alone they donated five thousand pounds and the Association has earmarked another one thousand three hundred pounds for the STC Quadrangular Sports Festival 2004. which is being coordinated by Senaka De Fonseka The Bishopians themed theirs with much style and panache - a Black & White Ball, reminiscent of the 1920's with black and white ostrich feathers adorning the Manet-like table decorations concocted by an old girl, Anusha Ekanayeke. Each guest was presented with a piece of love cake in a black and white box with the school motto non sibi sed omnibus displayed elegantly. A welcoming reception with buck fizz and canap,s followed by a light savoury tartlet of saut,ed leeks and wild mushrooms with a pesto dressing for a starter and a choice of rump of lamb with thyme, pan-fried sea bream in a parsley and caper butter sauce and a vegetarian goats cheese and spinach roulade as main courses and to finish with, a dainty dessert of poached pears with butterscotch sauce and pistachio ice cream and decorated with butterflies made of spun sugar made a spectacular finale.. Suran Wijegoonawardena and his band 'This Is It' provided scintillating music with superb performances by their saxophonist and vocalists. According to the Bishop's College PPA President, Ilham Ismail, the Association in UK has given funds to furnish the Auditorium and the interior of the new library as well as providing computers for the School. Their next project is to fund all the audio-visual facilities in the Library. |
