Quake shakes Papua JAKARTA, Friday (AFP) An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale hit Indonesia's easternmost province of Papua Friday but caused no damage or casualties, meteorology officials said. The latest tremor came after a succession of powerful earthquakes struck the eastern island of Flores two weeks ago, killing 34 people and injuring 160. The quake hit at 01:52 am (0456 GMT) and was centered 33 kilometers (around 20 miles) underground, said Lukito of the meteorology office here. The epicenter of the quake was approximately 70 kilometers south of the town of Nabire and the tremor was mostly felt by residents there. "This is relatively a minor quake and we have not yet received reports of damage or casualties," Lukito said. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common in Indonesia, which lies on the so-called "Pacific Ring of Fire". |
