by Chris Dhambarage

The Tour de Lanka cycling classic received a tremendous boost when four leading sports promoters announced their sponsorship package for the race at the launching ceremony held at the ANCL Board Room yesterday.

The National Savings Bank, DSI Samson Group, Holcim and Sign Tech Advertising Services Limited pledged their support and commitment to make this oldest and biggest cycling event in Sri Lanka a great success. In addition the Independent Television Network (ITN) and 'Lakhanda' Radio will be the official electronic media sponsor.

The Tour de Lanka race which has been revived after a lapse of eight years is organised by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL) and conducted by the Interim Committee for Cycling in Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Police.

The Chairman of ANCL Janadasa Peiris said that this is a significant occasion as this prestigious event has been revived after a lapse of eight years. He also said that it is even more important because the event has been organised to coincide with President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's tenth anniversary in office as President.

The Chairman of the Independent Television Network Newton Gunaratne said that cycling events in Sri Lanka is very popular among the young and the old and has gained a great amount of popularity over the years. He also said that 'Lakhanda' radio having started their programmes after just one week, had the privilege of covering the previous Tour de Lanka race in 1996.

The Director Editorial and Operations of ANCL Karunarathna Paranawithana said that the Tour de Lanka cycle race is one of the major sporting events which has been organised to coincide with the 'Nilwala Harasara' a concept initiated by the Minister of Media and Information Mangala Samaraweera.

Also present at this occasion were Jagath Gamanayake (Additional General Manager Marketing National Savings Bank), Kalana Ratnayake (Marketing Manager of DSI Samson Group), Indika Jayaweera of Holcim, Kasapa Mahendra de Silva of Sign Tech Advertising Limited and DIG Pathirana (President Interim Committee for Cycling).
