Trinco quiet

by Asanga Warnakulasuriya

Police yesterday reported Trincomalee was quiet following Monday's grenade blast which killed a bus passenger and injured three others.

Eastern Province North DIG Neville Wijesinghe told the Daily News yesterday that the Police curfew imposed on Monday night was lifted yesterday morning with no major incidents reported overnight.

"The security in the area was stepped up with the assistance of the Army and Navy to prevent any outbreak of violence," the DIG said. Police also have deployed additional troops in the area, the DIG said.

However as a preventive measure, a police curfew will be reimposed, the DIG added.

According to Police, several top level discussions attended by Chief of Defence Staff and Navy Commander Vice Admiral Daya Sandagiri along with Army Commander Lt. General Shantha Kottegoda were held yesterday to defuse the tension.

The Navy Commander also met Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim representatives in the area to discuss the situation, Police said.
