"Reliable sources have informed me that arrangements are being made to enable Potta Nawfer escape from prison," Ven. Rathana Thera said in a special statement. The Thera said all suspects in Judge Ambepitiya's killing have now been taken into custody. "All tests and investigations, including DNA tests have conferred 100 per cent that these suspects are responsible for this crime," the Thera said. Ven. Rathana Thera said it has also been revealed that certain senior police officers had links with Potta Nawfer. "We have come to know that all facilities are being provided to this suspect even at the Welikada prison. Even a separate room has been allocated for him," he said. The Thera questioned as to how the prison authorities were keeping him at the Welikada prison when the Judge had ordered him be taken to Kalutara prison. "Prison officials have violated even the Judge's orders. This is a very serious issue as this suspect might escape from the prison," the Thera said. Ven. Rathana Thera said if this suspect escapes from prison, the country's legal system would be severely affected. "Therefore, swift and tough measures should be taken for this issue. I request the Government to pay attention to this," the Thera added. Chief Government Whip and Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle said the Minister concerned would reply to this matter during the Committee Stage debate of the ministry. |
