Last week's incident in Parliament involving UNP MP T. Maheswaran took another turn yesterday with Maheswaran himself refusing to ask questions from the Government. He told the Speaker that he would not raise questions against the Government. "I am refusing to ask those questions," Maheswaran said at the oral question session at the commencement of Parliament sittings. "That's better. We are not answering questions raised by Maheswaran," Chief Government Whip and Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle said. Last week, Fernandopulle stressed that the Government has taken a decision not to answer questions by Maheswaran until he stops vilifying the President and the Bandaranaike family. However, Speaker W. J. M. Lokubandara asked Maheswaran to clearly clarify his position - whether he is refusing to ask or withdrawing those questions as it has to be properly recorded. "I have the right not to ask my questions," Maheswaran said. "That's good. If he is not asking the questions, then, there is no problem," Fernandopulle said. |
