Teachers' welfare facilities to be improved

The first of the series of discussions intended to uplift the welfare and physical infrastructure facilities of teacher professionals and university students was held at the President's House, Colombo under the patronage of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on Thursday.

Representatives from all Government Registered teaching professional Trade Unions and University Students' Associations participated.

The President explained measures mooted under the newly introduced programs to improve of teachers' welfare facilities. After Cabinet approval, a new circular will be issued in January next year.

University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof. Ranjith Mendis explained steps taken to improve the welfare and infrastructure facilities of university students.

The discussion also paid attention to enhance the quantum of financial allocations for universities. University Students Association representatives expressed their views at this discussion.

All University Vice Chancellors, Chairman and Vice Chairman of the UGC and senior officials of the Education Ministry participated in the discussion.
