The Gampaha Technical College will be upgraded as a fully equipped Institute of Higher Technology and the Niyagama Vocational Training Institute will be converted into a fully equipped Higher Technical Training Centre under a 23 million US dollar aid scheme provided by the SIVAT Institute of the Korean government. Skills Development, Vocational and Technical Education Minister Piyasena Gamage disclosed this when he toured Niyagama, Galle, Hiniduma and Neluwa areas in the Galle district with two visiting representatives of the SIVAT Institute of the Republic of Korea recently. Minister Gamage said the Korean government has been making large contributions towards the development of the Vocational and Industrial Training Sector in Sri Lanka. The Jaffna Technical College has been modernised under a scheme sponsored by the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) which has spent 2.33 million US dollars on the project. A batch of 213 instructors and instructresses serving in institutions under his Ministry's purview have received further training under the sponsorship of the Korean government. He said there are 36 technical colleges throughout the country today. The Ministry has now taken steps to select one technical college from each province for development as a higher technical institute. The SIVAT delegation accompanying the Minister on the tour comprised Prof. Yo Heo and Jai Myoung Choi, Director, Seoul Higher Vocational Training Institute. Chairman, National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority and several other Ministry officials were also present. |
