by Sandasen Marasinghe Colombo High Court Judge Deepali Wijesundara sentenced two accused of two separate heroin cases to life imprisonment yesterday when they were found guilty for possession of heroin. Ranil Mendis Gunasekara of Mount Lavinia and M. S. Rajini Khannan alias Ganesh of Gelani Street, Colombo 2 were sentenced to life imprisonment. R. M. Gunasekara was indicted for possession of 18.3 grams of heroin at Mount Lavinia on May 19, 2001 and selling them. He had been taken into custody by the Mt. Lavinia Police at Twenty feet road, Gnanendra Mawatha on the day in question. A polythene bag had been recovered in his pocket containing 40 grams of heroin in which 18.3 pure heroin found by the Government Analyst. Rajini Khannan was indicted on the count that he possessed 2.62 grams of heroin at Slave Island on September 19, 2000. He had been nabbed by the Police Narcotics Bureau on a tip off and 4.8 grams of adulterated heroin under his armpit fastened to his body with a adhesive tape. Government Analyst's reports revealed that it contained 2.62 grams of heroin. Evidence revealed that 26-year-old Khannan was married and had only attended to kindergarden school. He sold garlands near the Kovil at Wellawatta when he was a child and addicted to heroin in 1994. Later he sold heroin at Slave Island on days wages. He was paid Rs. 450 a day and consumed heroin of Rs. 250. State Counsel Ayesh Ariyasinghe appeared for prosecution of both cases. |
