by Asanga Warnakulasuriya A fire in Ratmalana had completely gutted a former Government food stores complex. According to Mt. Lavinia Police, the fire broke out in one of the stores and spread to other parts of the building before it was brought under control by Fire Department with the help of Police. Police said that prior to the incident, neighbouring residents in the area had staged a protest against the Urban Council's decision to allow a private firm to setup a garbage recycling plant. Police suspect a protester's hand in the fire. Property worth several lakhs of rupeees was damaged in the fire. No one was injured. On the directions of Mt. Lavinia SSP Willie Abeynayake, investigations are continuing to apprehend suspects. |
