Perera jnr. golf champ for 3rd year by Richard Dwight The Junior golf programme under the auspices of the Sri Lankan Golf Union (SLGU) and spearheaded by Radha Sundarampillai found the year's schedule ending on a triumphant note for the talented Mithum Perera when he yesterday at the RCGC did extremely well to get the better of the Indian Rahul Bakshi and compatriot Binupa Wijesinghe to win the Sri Lankan Junior Golf Championship for the third year running which was indeed commendable. The three-day junior golf championship conducted by SLGU and sponsored by 'Milo' that began on Wednesday with round one had 52 young golfers vying for championship honours. The promising Mithum Perera inheriting his father's skill former champion Nandasena - stamped his authority to edge out the Indians Amonjit Singh and Rahul Bakshi with their respective scores being 71, 73 and 74 followed by Sri Lankans Binupa Wijesinghe 76 and Dinesh Kumar 78. The second round on the following day saw the Indian Rahul Bakshi 71 get past Mithum Perera 77 with Indian Amonjit also at 77 being trailed by Binupa Wijesinghe 75 and Dinesh Kumar 80. Going by the golf played during the past two days on the first and second rounds, yesterday's final round was evenly poised with the championship wide open between the five main contenders. Mithum Perera, the 17-year-old from President's College gave a concerted effort on the fairways and on the green to notch 69 to beat the Indian Rahul Bakshi 75 to second place and Binupa Wijesinghe 75 to third place. Perera did well to defend the title for third consecutive year. The final tally was Mithum Perera 217, Rahul Bakshi 220 and Binupa Wijesinghe 226. Results: Main championship - Gross winner: 1. Mithum Perera, 2. Rahul Bakshi, 3. Binupa Wijesinghe. Bronze category - Gross winner: 1. Amonjit Singh, 2. Suhaib Sangani, 3. Zen Dharmaratne. |
